Why it matters

MOT classes, in plain English

In the UK, MOT tests are grouped into classes set by the DVSA. The class depends on the type of vehicle: everyday cars and light vans, larger passenger vehicles, and heavier goods vans. Booking the wrong class wastes a trip. Knowing yours keeps the diary simple.

Albyn MOT’s public offer is Class 4 · 5L · 7 (5L-eligible lightweight Class 5 only, not full Class 5). Soft-launch: enquiries are open now. Bay slots are confirmed after DVSA sign-off.

Categories

The three classes

UK DVSA-style categories, summarised for Broxburn customers.

Class 4

Suits: everyday cars, dual-purpose vehicles, motor caravans / motorhomes in the Class 4 weight band, and light vans up to 3,000 kg DGW.

The standard MOT class for most private and light commercial vehicles on UK roads.

  • Cars and dual-purpose vehicles
  • Motor caravans within Class 4 limits
  • Light goods / vans ≤3,000 kg DGW

Class 5 (5L at Albyn)

Suits: larger passenger vehicles that sit outside standard Class 4, typically bigger people-carriers and minibus-type vehicles (by DVSA rules).

Aimed at larger passenger vehicles beyond the everyday Class 4 band.

  • Larger passenger vehicles beyond Class 4
  • Some private buses / larger people-carriers (by DVSA rules)
At Albyn: we offer Class 5L only (lightweight Class 5 that is 5L-eligible). We do not offer full Class 5 or Class 5a. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is 5L-eligible, call us before you travel.

Class 7

Suits: goods vehicles above light-van Class 4 weight, typically vans and light commercials between over 3,000 kg and 3,500 kg DGW.

Common for heavier trade, courier and fleet vans that tip past the Class 4 weight limit.

  • Goods vehicles >3,000–3,500 kg DGW
  • Heavier trade / courier vans
  • Check your plate / handbook for DGW before booking
